A sweet beginning...
The Candy Box opened its doors in the early
1950s. The owner, Mildred Price, was sister to
the Kellys, owners of the successful candy
manufacturer, Bayards Chocolates, which she sold
in her newly opened store on route 322,
Richwood, NJ.
The second owners, the Reiners, kept the
tradition going by continuing to sell
hand-dipped Bayards Chocolates. They acquired
the store in the early 1960s and operated it for
about 20 years until the current owners bought
it.
On March 4, 1981, Eleanor Madara, with the help
of her husband, William, opened the store in its
current location on Lambs Road.
Since the move, The Candy Box has been a
family-run business. Three generations of
Madaras work to keep The Candy Box the
Friendly, country store that the community has
cherished for over 50 years, and we are still
selling Bayard's chocolates.
